An overview: qualitative data analysis: process of moving from raw data evidence-based interp. 2 processes: separating aggregated texts into smaller segments of meaning for close consideration, reflection, & interp, examine to identify themes/patterns, read all data to get sense of the whole/id broad themes. Spend as much time analyzing data as you spent collecting it. Begin w/pts. of conflict, tension, contradiction: emic: researcher reads/interp. data from partic. Pov in context in which data are collected. Researcher works from perspective/words of partic: etic: researcher interp. data in comparison to theories/perspectives. Partic. behav. /talk analyzed more conceptually/generally & w/out specific regard to context. The process of analysis & interpretation: 2 steps, capture reactions to/impressions of ppl, setting & interactions. Analytical memos: analytical memos: researchers use to capture 1st impressions/reflections about setting, ppl & interactions. Diagramming the data: researchers use tables, diagrams, graphs to make relationships among data more evident. Data displayed by case, subject, theme, interaction event.
