Stated atonement was mankind"s moral responsibility to pay god back. Humanity needed to repay god for the original sin. God became human to sacri ce himself so the humans could have a clear debt. Earlier representations christ made him warrior like and an active member of the cruci xion. Later, christ becomes the suffering body of a very human god. The theological development has forceful artistic and stylistic consequences. The art focused on the the humble and particularities of bodily pain and grief.
