Document Summary
In any religion"s literary and visual representation of the godhead is a powerful index. In some religions the visual representation of god is so holy that it is illegal. In the middle ages in europe the bodily representation of christ became a central preoccupations for writers, readers and visual artists. Atonement: the act whereby humans reconcile with god after the separation caused by original sin. St. anselm of canterbury developed a new conception of atonement. Stated atonement was mankind"s moral responsibility to pay god back. Humanity needed to repay god for the original sin. God became human to sacri ce himself so the humans could have a clear debt. Earlier representations christ made him warrior like and an active member of the cruci xion. Later, christ becomes the suffering body of a very human god. The theological development has forceful artistic and stylistic consequences. The art focused on the the humble and particularities of bodily pain and grief.
