● Methods of delivery
1. Reading verbatim from a manuscript-a speech written out word for word and read to the audience
○ Sound natural, use eye contact, be enthusiastic, talk with your audience
2. Reciting a memorized text
○ Memorize it so well you can focus on communicating with audience, not remember the
words
3. Speaking impromptu
○ State the point you are answering, state point you wish to make, support your point with
appropriate statistics, examples, or testimony, summarize your point
4. Speaking extemporaneously-a carefully prepared and rehearsed speech that is presented from a brief
set of notes
○ Prepared properly, full control over ideas, yet you are not tied to a manuscript
● The speaker’s voice
○ Volume-the loudness or softness of the speaker’s voice
○ Pitch-the highness or lowness of the speaker’s voice
○ Inflections-changes in the pitch or tone of a speaker’s voice
○ Monotone-a constant pitch or tone of voice
○ Rate-the speed at which a person speaks
○ Pause-a momentary break in the vocal delivery of a speech
○ Vocalized pause-a pause that occurs when a speaker fills the silence between words with
vocalizations such as “uh”, “er”, “um”
○ Vocal variety-changes in a speaker’s rate, pitch, and volume that give the voice variety and
expressiveness
○ Pronunciation-the accepted standard of sound and rhythm for words in a given language
○ Articulation-the physical production of particular speech sounds
○ Dialect-a variety of a language distinguished by variations of accent, grammar, or vocabulary
● The speaker’s body
○ Kinesics-the study of body motion as a systematic mode of communication
○ Personal appearance: evoke a favorable first impression with your dress
○ Movement: get rid of habits of nervousness
○ Gestures-motions of a speaker’s hand or arms during a speech→ do not distract from you
speech
○ Eye contact-direct visual contact with the eyes of another person
● Practicing delivery
1. Go through preparation outline aloud
2. Prepare speaking outline
3. Practice speech aloud several times using only the speaking outline
4. Polish and refine your delivery
5. Give your speech a dress rehearsal
● Answering audience questions
○ Formulate answers to possible questions
○ Practice the delivery of your answers
○ Approach questions with a positive attitude
○ Listen carefully
○ Direct answers to the entire audience
