Document Summary

13. 1 offspring acquire genes from parents by inheriting chromosomes. In an organism"s dna, genes are located at specific locations of loci. Asexual reproduction = identical offspring are produced by one parent via mitosis. Sexual reproduction = involves 2 genes from 2 parents combining, giving rise to genetically different babies/offspring. Fertilization and meiosis alternate in sexual life cycles. Somatic (body) cells = diploid (2 sets of chromosomes, 1 from each parent) Human cells that are diploid possess 22 autosome pairs which are homologous as well as a pair of chromosomes for sex: xx = female , xy = male. Haploid gametes made by the ovaries and testes for humans and most mammals. For humans 1 gamete = 1 set of chromosomes. When and egg and sperm interact (during fertilization), chromosome sets combine to form a diploid zygote. 13. 3 meiosis reduce the number of chromosomes sets from diploid to haploid.
