The term given to the earliest known and recorded formal systems of writing is cuneiform. The distinguishing characteristic of this particular type of writing is its wedge-shaped marks that were made on clay tablets. As such, groups of nations or people groups began to be ruled by an emperor (or empress), or some other type of powerful and cen- tralized form of government.
