WGSS 380A Chapter 1: Ovid's Metamorphoses

36 views2 pages

Document Summary

I think the biggest takeaway from book one of ovid"s metamorphoses are the similarities drawn between the events of the creation in his story-telling versus the bible. I thought it was interesting how man was made to rule the earth, but the gods clearly had a lot to say in the following stories. Humans were at the mercy of the gods and rather than praising them out of thanksgiving, were offering goods so they would not be punished. Women in particular play an important role in these stories. Their insignificance as humans is the first thing noticed they did not have the same standing as men. They were victimized, abused, and raped, all without any concern from others. This norm where women like daphne and io are being turned into objects like trees and cows all because the gods were in some sort of quarrel is astonishing. They are essentially stripped of their being and have no autonomy whatsoever.
