What kids need to succeed was published in 1994 based on the survey results. Financial resources, genetics, and trauma cause issues. Assets increase in value over time and provide a sense of security they are resources teens can draw again and again. These assets are cumulative (the more the better) External assets are things in a young persons environment that support, nurture, set boundaries, and use of time. External assets: support, empowerment, boundaries & expectations, constructive use of time. Internal assets are attitudes, values and competencies. Internal assets: commitment to learn, positive values, social competencies, positive identity. Number of assets decline as kids age. Young people who have more assets are less likely to get involved in problem behaviors.
