The ability to maintain attention to a selected stimulus for a prolonged period of time. Cognitive process involving planning actions, allocating attention to goals, detecting and compensating for errors, monitoring progress on tasks, and dealing with novel or difficult circumstances. Attention in the first year is dominated by an orienting/ investigative process. Involves directing attention to what and where such as color. Habituation and dishabituation is closely linked with attention.
