EDPS 270 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Birth Weight, Sarcopenia, Body Image
Document Summary
Two key patterns of growth: cephalocaudal pattern: The sequence in which the fastest growth occurs at the top if the body, the head, with physical growth in size, weight, and feature differentiation gradually working from top to bottom. This pattern occurs in the bead because the top part of the head (the eyes and brain) grow faster than the lower parts such as the jaw. During prenatal development and early infancy, the head constitutes for an extraordinary large portion of the total body. Sensory and motor development precedes according to this pattern. Ex: infants can see objects before they can control their torso: proximodorsal pattern: The sequence in which growth starts at the center of the body and moves towards the extremities. Ex: early maturation of muscular control of the trunk and arm, compared to that of the hands and fingers. They use their whole hand before they can individually control fingers. Weight and height in infancy and children.
