Canada"s publicly funded health system is based on the principle of equal access to care at no cost to the individual. This encourages more frequent use of health services by a larger number of people. Risk factors: characteristics or conditions that are associated with the development of a disease or injury. Some are biological and others are behavioural. A risk factor is associated with a health problem, it does not necessarily cause the problem. Sometimes behavioural risk factors are associated with causes of death, the top in canada are cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and accidents. Cancer: smoking, high alcohol consumption, and obesity. Heart disease: smoking, high blood pressure, high dietary cholesterol, obesity, and lack of exercise.
