Depression: a low, sad state marked by significant levels of sadness, lack of energy, low self- worth, guilt, or related symptoms. Mania: a state or episode of euphoria or frenzied activity in which people may have an exaggerated belief that the world is theirs for the taking. Depressive disorders: group of disorders marked by unipolar depression. Unipolar depression: depression without a history of mania. Bipolar disorders: disorder marked by alternating or intermixed periods of mania and depression. Unhappiness/dejection normal, makes us self-reflect, can be beneficial. 18% of all adults experience episode of severe unipolar depression at some point in their life. Affects people of any age, earlier onset happening. 85% of people with unipolar depression recover, some without treatment. Emotional symptoms - some feel sad and dejected, lose sense of humour, feel less pleasure or no please (anhedonia), anxiety, anger, agitation, crying spells. Motivational symptoms lose desire to pursue usual activities, lack of drive, initiative, force themselves to work/be social/eat.
