Chapter 18 disorders of aging + cognition. Older people on the rise, women outnumber men. People become more prone to illness + injury. Half over 65 have 2 or 3 chronic illnesses, 15% have 4+ Likely to have stress of loss purpose, people, activities, hearing/vision etc. 20% of all old people meet criteria for mental disorder, yet fewer than 20% actually receive. Geropsychology: field of psychology concerned w/ the mental health of elderly people. Developed almost entirely in last 40 years, only 4% of clinicians work primarily w/ elderly persons. Psychological problems in 2 groups: disorders common among people in all age groups, but connected to process of aging, depressive, anxiety + substance use, disorders of cognition, delirium, mild neurocognitive disorders + major neurocognitive disorders. Most common mental health problems of older adults. 20% of people become depressed at some point during old age, rate higher in women. People feel worse in nursing homes than those in community.
