Did not respond to therapies, so restrained + given essentials. Philippe pinel 1793, started moral treatment movement + started large mental hospitals than asylums. Located in isolated areas where land + labor were cheap, protect patients from stresses of daily life. State hospitals: public mental institutions in the united states, run by the individual states. Some put in back wards, used straitjackets + handcuffs. Most common was social breakdown syndrome: extreme withdrawal, anger, physical aggressive + loss of interest in personal appearance + functioning. Institutional care takes a turn for the better.
