PSYC 3140 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Presenting Problem, Behaviorism, Josef Breuer
Document Summary
Psychological disorder: psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected. Phobia: type of psychological disorder characterized by marked and persistent fear of an object or situation. Diagnosing someone with a psychological disorder is often difficult because judgement on the extent of abnormality could be challenging. That"s why criteria for diagnosis are not just categories to be fulfilled, they exist as a continuum [feeling nauseous and fainting at the sight of blood are different responses] Psychological disorders can be viewed as extreme expressions of normal emotions, behaviours and cognitive processes. Society sometimes tolerates eccentricities from people if they view those people as productive. Another factor for abnormality is whether the behaviour is beyond someone"s control. A prototype typical symptoms associated with a disorder [if one is close to the prototype and meets the minimum criteria, they are considered to have the disorder.
