Depression is the most common mental health problem of older adults. The symptoms of depression in old age are the same for younger adults. 20% become depressed at some point in old age: the rate is higher in women. 32% of those in nursing homes become depressed. Depression raises an older person"s chance of developing other medical problems (like stroke) Older people are more likely than young to commit suicide, and most suicides are related to depression: rate of suicide for young: 12. 1 per 100,000, rate of suicide for old: 16 per 100,000. Treatment: cognitive-behavioural, interpersonal, antidepressants or a combo of them: antidepressants are risky because the body breaks them down differently in old age. Gad is common in the elderly (7%) The prevalence of anxiety disorders increased with old age. Declining health can lead to heightened anxiety. 3-7% of older men have alcohol use disorder in the us. Alcohol abuse in the 50"s and 60"s: late onset alcoholism.
