Assumption 1 psychological traits + states exist trait: any distinguishable, relatively stable enduring way in which one individual varies from another. Psychological traits have more wide range of possible characteristics, sexual orientation, preferences etc. Few people deny they exist, but controversy on how they exist. States: also distinguish one person from another, but are relatively less enduring. Construct: informed, scientific concept developed or constructed to describe or explain behaviour. Overt behaviour: refers to observable action or the product of an observable action, including test or assessment related responses. Traits not manifested in behaviour 100% of the time, change as we age/grow etc. Assumption 2 psychological traits and states can be quantified and measured. When receiving test result, understand how trait was defined by test developer. Have to consider type of content that would provide insight into the construct being measured. Assumption 3 test-related behaviour predicts non-test related behaviour.
