PSYC 2510 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Auditory Cortex, Periaqueductal Gray, Olfactory Bulb
Document Summary
Synesthesia= a condition in which perceptual or cognitive activities (eg. listening to music, reading) trigger exceptional experiences (eg. of colour, taste) *may experience cognitive benefits derived from the experience eg. perfect pitch. *sensation= the absorption of energy, such as light or sound waves, by sensory organs, such as the ears and eyes. Perception involves organizing and translating sensory input into something meaningful. *psychophysics= study of how physical stimuli are translated into psychological experience. Threshold= a dividing point between energy levels that do and do not have a detectable effect. Absolute threshold= for a specific type of sensory input, the minimum amount of stimulation that an organism can detect. Just noticeable difference (jnd)= the smallest difference in the amount of stimulation that a specific sense can detect. Weber"s law= the size of a just noticeable difference is a constant proportion of the size of the initial stimulus.
