PSYC 2130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Scatter Plot, American Psychological Association, Random Assignment
Document Summary
Personality research involves asking and answering questions about why people act, feel, and think as they do. 3 basic approaches to personality research three major research approaches have been used to gather information about personality: case studies, correlational studies, and experiments. The major differences between the three methods are found in (1) the types of observations made, (2) the circumstances in which the observations are made, and (3) how the data from the observations are examined. Case study- a case study involves a detailed qualitative description of the behavior of a single individual. Psychoanalysts use case studies extensively to support their theoretical claims. Life history/narrative- page 41: a special type of case study is the life history or narrative approach. As valuable as they may be for information about subjective experience, for actual research applications, life histories suffer all of the shortcomings of the case study method.
