PSYC 2110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: John Bowlby, Konrad Lorenz, Shy Child
Document Summary
Chpt 12 and 13: personality and social relations. Carol izard studied infants emotional expressions by videotaping babies after certain events occurred (taking toy away etc. ) and asked investigators what the expressions were. Researchers agree that babies communicate a variety of feelings through their facial expressions and they become more recognizable with age. At birth they show interest, distress, disgust and contentment. By the end of the 2nd month babies display social smiles. 2-7 months basic emotions such as anger, sadness, joy, surprise, and fear appear. Some learning/cognitive are necessary before babies are able to express emotions that were not present at birth. 2yrs infants display complex emotions or self conscious emotions as embarrassment, shame, guilt, envy and pride. May require self recognition and an understanding of rules or standards. Emotional display rules: specify the circumstances under which diff emotions should or should not be expressed.
