Reflex activity (birth-1m) automatic reflex reactions become smooth and systematic, achieved through reflex exercise, newborns operate reflexes in order to maintain an equilibrium in his/her environment. Primary circular reactions (1-4m) pleasurable response centered on infants own body that is discovered by chance ex. Sucking thumb which is self-soothing, primary because they are first motor habits to appear and circular because they are repetitive. Secondary circular reactions (4-8m) pleasurable response centered on external object discovered by chance or perfomed over and over again, ex. Peek-a-boo, circular reactions sequence of events, child stumble upon series of actions, reenacts experience by reacting ex. Presses button and hears sound and keeps doing it again. Coordination of secondary schemes (8-12m) infants begin to coordinate two or more actions to achieve simple objectives, first sign of goal directed behaviour, child begins planful activities ex. Child knows that broken elastic band is behind a purse they will try to move whatever is blocking what they want.
