PSYC 2110 Chapter 13 Notes
Introduction
Case Studies
Tronick and colleagues pointed out that the cocaine-eposed ifats’ ehaiours durig
the still-face episode indicated that the infants did have the ability to interact and
connect with their caregivers.
The ifats’ ehaiours also suggested that their mothers were providing some degree
of social interaction and that this offered hope that intervention strategies might
improve the developmental outcomes of the cocaine-exposed babies.
Any or all of the methods we have discussedstructured interviews, questionnaires,
clinical method, and behavioural observationscan be used to compile a detailed
portrait of a sigle idiidual’s deelopet through the ase stud ethod.
In preparing an individualized record, or case, the investigator typically seeks many
kinds of information about the participant, such as his or her family background,
socioeconomic status, health records, academic or work history, and performance on
psychological tests.
Much of the information included in any case history comes from interviews with and
observations of the individual
Although the questions asked and observations made are typically not standardized and
may vary considerably from case to case.
Case studies may also be used to describe groups.
For example, Michael Bamburg (2004) conducted a project investigating identity
development in 10-, 12-, and 15-year-old boys.
During the project, information was collected from journal entries, oral accounts, open
ended one-on-one interviews, and group discussions.
From the information collected, Bamburg chose an excerpt from a single segment of
conversation to illustrate how adolescent males construct their identities within the
moment-to-moment course of a conversation.
