PSYC 2030 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Behaviorism, Institute For Operations Research And The Management Sciences
Document Summary
There are four major research methods: experimental, quasi-experimental, survey, case study. A great limitation in psychological research is: there is no direct observation. As such, behaviourism became a major approach in psychology. Behaviourism: an approach to psychology that asserts that human behaviour can be understood in terms of directly-observable relationship, without having to refer to underlying mental states. However, just because something cannot be directly observed does not mean it hypothesis about its nature cannot be put forward and tested. Instruments: any procedure or device used to assess/ measure psychological or behavioural phenomena (e. g. intelligence, attitudes, eye movements). The primary difference between these two is that characteristics are measured by psychological tests on specific dimensions (e. g. iq, verbal reasoning, depression), responses of which are compared to the general population. Psychological tests: measurement procedures used to identify a person"s mental state relative to other people (or population norms). Psychological tests generally involve large number of questions or tasks.
