PSYC 2030 Chapter 9: Research Methods - Chapter 9
Document Summary
Chapter 9 - examining relationships between variables: correlation. These would be univariate data - involving a single variable instead, we have participants" responses on pairs of measures (x and y) This is bivariate data - involving the relationship between two variables. variate is another word for variable the idea of correlation is useful because it helps us make predictions - a common statistical purpose or goal of correlational analysis. The aim is to be able to estimate (with some uncertainty) a person"s score on one variable by knowing that person"s score on another variable (or variables) Knowing that there is a relationship b/w two variables enables us to predict (with some degree of uncertainty) the score on one variable if we know the score on the other variable. While t-tests and correlations are used to address different questions, they can also be seen to be closely related. Between-subjects t-test and a correlation can be used for exactly the same purpose.
