Module 21: basic learning concepts and classical conditioning. Much of what we do we learn from experience. Nature"s most important gift may be our adaptability our capacity to learn new behaviours that help us cope with our changing world. Learning breeds hope; what is learnable we can potentially teach. What has been learned we can potentially change by new learning. By learning, we humans are able to adapt to our environments. We learn to expect and prepare for significant events such as food or pain (classical conditioning) We typically learn to repeat acts that bring rewards and avoid acts that bring unwanted results (operant conditioning) We learn new behaviours by observing events and watching others, and through language, we learn things we have neither experienced nor observed (cognitive learning)
