Those characterized as mentally ill are viewed as erratic, dangerous, incompetent and inferior. 2: clinicians rely on a variety of criteria, the foremost of which are the following, 1) deviance: People are often said to have a disorder b/c their behaviour deviates from what their society considers acceptable. People are judged to have a psychological disorder b/c their everyday adaptive behaviour is impaired. Extremely deviant, maladaptive or distressing: where normality and abnormality exist on a continuum (it"s a matter of degree) Stereotypes of psychological disorders: the 3 stereotypes about psychological disorders that are largely inaccurate: The vast majority of people who are diagnosed as mentally ill eventually improve and lead normal productive lives, and others are failures: 2) people with psychological disorders are often violent and dangerous. This stereotype exists b/c incidents of violence involving the mentally ill tend to command media attention. Only happens to small minority of people, with severe disorders.
