Document Summary
Nervous system: complex communication network in which signals are constantly being transmitted, received, and integrated. Neurons: the individual cells in the nervous system that receive, integrate, and transmit information. Basic links that permits communication with the nervous system. Communicate with neurons cell body (soma): contains the cell nucleus and much of the chemical machinery common to most cells. Rest of the neuron is devoted to handling information. Have branches that come out of the cell body called dendrites. Dendrites: parts of a neuron that are specialized to receive information. Receive information from many other cells and so have extensive dendritic trees. From the dendrite, information flows into the cell body and travels away from the cell body through the axon axon: a long, thin fiber that transmits signals away from the soma to other neurons. Can be quite long and can branch off to communicate to other cells.
