Document Summary
Psychologists and scientists share 3 goals: measurement and description. The investigator must find a method of measuring the phenomenon under study. Thus, first goal of psychology is to develop measurement techniques that make it possible to measure behaviour: understanding and prediction. To evaluate their understanding, scientists must make and test predictions called hypothesis. A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. Variables are any measurable condition, events, characteristics, or behaviours that are controlled or observed in a study: application and control. Psychology attempts to apply research findings to practical problems in schools, businesses, factories and mental hospitals. A theory is a system of interrelated ideas used to explain a set of observations. There are 5 steps to scientific investigation: formulate a hypothesis, select research method and design study, collect the data, analyze the data and draw conclusions, report the findings. Variables must be clearly defined and must be accurate.
