Person perception: the process of forming impressions of others. Judgements of others personality are often swayed by their appearance, especially their physical attractiveness. Good looking people command more of our attention than less attractive individuals. Attractive people personality traits: more sociable, friendly, warm and well adjusted. Social schemas: organized clusters of ideas about categories of social events and people. People routinely place others in categories, and these categories influence their perception. Self-schema: set of memories, beliefs, and generalizations about one"s behaviour in each domain. Stereotypes: widely held beliefs that people have certain characteristics because of their membership in a specific group. Most common stereotypes: sex, age, and membership in ethnic or occupational groups. Age stereotypes: elderly people are slow, feeble, forgetful and asexual. Ethnic stereotypes: jews are mercenary, germans are methodical, italians are passionate. Occupational stereotypes: lawyers are manipulative, accountants are conforming, artists are moody.
