Teratogens: agents known to cause harm during prenatal development. Fetal alcohol syndrome (fas): birth defects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (arnd) less severe symptoms. Neonatal abstinence syndrome (nas) withdrawal symptoms during neonatal period. Consequences: low birth weight/length, small bodies, poor motor coordination, low iq, visual disorder, adhd. Season of birth effect: perinatal environmental conditions can have an impact on healthy development; a disproportionate number of people with the same conditions/disorder born during the same month of the year. Rubella & congenital rubella syndrome: contagious viral disease; damage to fetus is tied to time of maternal infection. Most prevalent defect in crs is 80% of infected children are deaf. Easily passed on to children through 1) utero from mother to fetus, 2) during delivery when fetus comes in contact with infected blood, 3)through breast milk. Consequences: muscle weakness, failure to attain developmental milestones at expected age, impaired brain growth, spasticity/rigidity.
