KINE 1020 Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Document Summary
Chapter 20 muscle adaptations to strength or resistance training. Most strength/resistance studies that have been conducted are 3-6 months because the studies are done on students and that"s simply the usual amount of time that they are available. At gains in hypertrophy are not immediate: the gains hypertrophy are more linear and longer term with slower increases. There is a constant turnover in muscles, with new muscle fibers replacing old muscle fibers, in a way remodeling the muscle; this process is critical to the normal function of the muscle. The number and type of muscle fibers is genetically determined but small modifications are possible in the type of muscle fiber and the size with training or detraining. The formation of new muscle fiber is called myogenesis, beginning from the cell myoblast myotube muscle: this process is regulated by activators (myod and myogenin) and inhibitors.
