Child-and Youth-hood
The authors explain how children’s rights are recognized in the international charter of
physical education and sport. What are some of these rights ?
The right to rest and leisure
The right to age-appropriate play and recreation
The right to protection from economic exploitation
Protection from doing dangerous work
Protection from doing work that interferes with one’s education
Protection from doing work that is harmful to the child’s health or physical, mental,
spiritual, moral or social development.
The charter provides a comprehensive raft of protections for children in the context of
physical education and sport. Yet the authors identify a problem. What is that problem?
Almost half of the 40 articles dealing directly with children’s rights are occasionally or
routinely violated in most countries when we consider children’s involvement with sports.
What are some specific examples of this problem that the authors identify?
Child manufacture of sporting equipment: -child labour can be defined as children
leading adult lives, working long hours for low wages under conditions damaging their
health and to their physical and mental development. Deprived of meaningful education
and training opportunities.
-Used in tannery factories, preparing leather, manufacture of cricket balls
-Used to hand stitch soccer balls
Child trafficking: -camel racing is a popular sport, in several countries of the Arabian
Peninsula. Small children are preferred as jockeys because of their lightweight. Puts them
at risk of injury, death, poorly fed and mistreated to keep their weight low. Children as
young as two have been either kidnapped or purchased from parents
-Second form of child trafficking: child soccer players to professional soccer clubs in
Western Europe.
-Agents contracting with professional clubs to sign agreements with parents to go to
Europe and try out for and play on the clubs’ youth teams. Those who do not make it are
often not returned.
Children in high performance sport: - athletic talent identified at an early age, recruited
and intensively trained and receives specialized training for a particular sport. This can
have the effect of cutting them off from family, friends and wider society, causing stress
and impaired social, psychological and intellectual development
What solutions to the problem do the authors offer?
1) Educate (all of the adults involved in the lives of elite child athletes) about child
development and about maintaining a balance in children’s lives. Education is also key to
resolving child labour in the sporting goods industry
2) Use human rights documents to press signatory governments to uphold children’s
rights.
