To assemble an effective and ef cient system, you should select organize components while understanding the tradeoffs between overall system performance and cost, control, and complexity. People involved in selecting their organization"s computer hardware must clearly understand current and future business requirements so they can make informed acquisition decisions. Computer system hardware components include devices that perform the functions of input, processing, data storage, and output. Central processing unit (cpu): the part of the computer that consists of three associated elements: the arithmetic/logic unit, the control unit and the register areas. Arithmetic/logic unit (alu): the part of the cpu that performs mathematical calculations and makes logical comparisons. Processing and memory devices: power, speed and capacity. The components responsible for processing the cpu and memory are housed together in the same box or cabinet, called the system unit. Clock speed: a series of electronic pulses produced at a predetermined rate that affects machine cycle time.
