The study of health and its determinants in specified populations with the goal of improving health. Epidemic (the word) derives from a study of the causes of disease. Classic example of epidemiology came from john snow, who noticed the correlation between deaths in various districts and the source of drinking water in london. This was done as he went door to door asking about water sources. He tend removed the wrong pumps and then the number of deaths declined. William farr, who is from london and is a health official, came up with the fact that poverty is a factor in poor health. These types of approaches, like the one william farr, came up with is not addressed in the public health and medical schools, although it is important. The japanese smoke the most but still lead the world in good health.
