Document Summary

Population biology-the dynamic processes that affect population size and distribution. Important information in natural history and population biology: Demographic studies follow known individuals of different ages and sizes in a population to determine their rates of growth, reproduction, and survival. Population viability analysis- estimates the ability of a population to persist in the future. Recovery criteria(rc)- predetermined thresholds that signal that an endangered species can be removed from protection. Minimum viable population(mvp)- the # of individuals necessary to ensure long-term survival. Minimum dynamic area- area of suitable habitat necessary to maintain the mvp. Source populations-core populations with fairly stable numbers. Extinct(ex)-the species is no longer known to exist. Extinct in the wild(ew)-species only exists in captivation. Critically endangered(cr)-extremely high risk of going extinct in the wild. Endangered(en)-very high risk of going extinct in the wild. Vulnerable(vu)-high risk of going extinct in the wild. Focal species-protect and area or an ecosystem.
