In 19th and early 20th centuries, many researchers embraced idea of biological determinism the belief that the way we act reflects in-built biological traits such as the need to reproduce, need to survive, etc. North american sociologists challenged the born in the bone" thinking. They argued that human behaviour is in large measure a reflection of the societal and cultural forces. Socialization our beliefs, values, attitudes, and even our emotions are sculpted throughout our lives by our contact with parents, siblings, peers, schools, religion, media, and societal institutions. The enthusiasm for biology remains respectable in some scientific spheres. Sociobiologists argue that much human social behaviour can and should be explained in terms of our evolutionary heritage and resultant biological makeup. Ex. men are hard-wired" to respond with violence. Many social scientists continue to oppose biologically based explanations. Neither social nor biological determinism is entirely satisfactory in explaining human behaviour.
