PS280 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Intelligence Quotient, Flashlight, Job Performance
Document Summary
Intelligence tests were first assessment tools developed by psychologists to win widespread acceptance. First scientific study of intellectual functioning was conducted by sir francis galton (1822-1911) in 1883 to test if intelligence has a hereditary aspect. Galton believed pure intelligence could best be measured by studying physiological clues (ex speed of repsonse to flashlight / sensory intelligence) First widely accepted and successful test of intelligence was designed to predict academic performance. Alred binet (1857-1911) was commissioned by paris school board to develop means of determining which children should receive public school education and which required special education. He developed separate tests of judgement, comprehension, and reasoning. This resulted in intelligence quotient (iq) which was a reflection of performance compared w population of others of the same age. Binet"s work developed into the stanford-binet intelligence scales which are now in 5th edition.
