PS270 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Peer Pressure, Social Proof
Document Summary
Conformity is when one changes their behaviors and values to match with others. Compliance is when one goes with social pressures even though they don"t listens to someone else"s agree. Acceptance is when one has true feelings and belief in what the social pressures are. The three classic sets of conformity studies are: Obedience study norm formation: sherif"s study of, asch"s study of, milgram"s group pressure. An example of conformity would be if everyone around you is doing drugs and drinking you don"t want to be the only one not participating so you decide to join in. An example of compliance would be when someone asks someone for a favor and you do it even though you don"t want to do it. If you are being requested to do something by someone who has more authority over you, you tend to do what he or she asks.
