Document Summary
Motives: needs, wants, interests and desires that propel ppl in certain directions. Goals can be result of both intentional and automatic activation. Appears in a diverse array of theories that otherwise have little in common i. e. psychoanalytic & behaviourist formulations (clark hull) Apply concept of homeostasis: a state of physiological equilibrium, or stability to behaviour. Drive: an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension: viewed as disruptions of the preferred equilibrium, e. g. when body temp rises/drops, automatic responses occr. When individual experience a drive motivated to pursue actions that will lead to drive reduction. Cannot explain all motivation: homeostasis irrelevant to some human motives like thirst for knowledge", motivation could exist w/o drive arousal. E. g. stop for ice cream after seeing an ad even thought ur not hungry. Drive theories assume ppl always try to reduce internal tension there4 cant explain this behaviour.
