Phoneme: smallest unit of sound in a language; an individual sound like ba, ta. Morpheme: smallest units of language that convey meaning. Syntax: systems for using words and word order to convey meaning. Phonology: the study of how individual sound or phonemes are used to produce language. Pre-vocal learning- 2-4 months babies can perceive phenomes of every language. Cooing- 2 months- babies can make non-crying vocalization. Babbling- 6 months- meaningless speech sounds are repetitive/mixed. First words-1 year- simple speaking begins, can understand approx. 50 words , won"t be able to speak that many until 6 months later. Pragmatics-3 years - vocabulary is approximately 1,000 words, have the understanding that some sentences are statements/ requests. Grammar- 4 years- by age 9 able to infer the meaning of obscure language (metaphors)
