PS102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Statistical Significance, Null Hypothesis, Statistical Inference
Document Summary
Step 3: select a research method, choose participants and collect data. Step 5: seek scientific review, publish, and replicate. Independent variable condition/event thought to be a factor in changing another condition. Dependant variable condition/event expected to change as a variation of independent variable. In choosing participants for a study, a sample must be take. Sample: group of peoples studied in an experiment. Random selection is used to identify a sample in a way that everyone in the population has an equal chance of being involved in the study. In picking research methods, descriptive research methods are often used to allow researchers to demonstrate a relationship between variables of interest, without specifying causal relationship. Naturalistic and laboratory observations: playground versus big brother, in laboratory observations: can control certain variables, naturalistic observation is a no (ethical reasons) need consent from child & parent. Chapter 2 & appendix b: disadvantages: observer bias and the hawthorne effect (act better when watched)
