Stream of consciousness: coined by william james, signify how we experience our conscious life because consciousness, like a running stream, keeps moving yet seems to be the same. William james said our conscious awareness continually shifts based on what we"re paying attention to and how intensely we are attending. Alan turing developed the turing test in 1950 as a means for determining when an artificial intelligence program has reached human-like consciousness. If a machine can fool 30% of the people who interact with it into thinking it was human and conscious it is deemed to be a genuine artificial intelligence form. Due to difficulties of conducting research on elusive concepts, many researchers shifted interest from consciousness to observable behaviour. With the help of neuroimaging techniques, investigators have been able to explore relationship between brain activity and various states of consciousness.
