PP247 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5-5: Invisible Hand, Adolf Eichmann, Aspet
Document Summary
Courses on business ethics have become increasingly popular for many reasons, including heightened public scrutiny and distrust of professionals, the growth of consumer and environmental movements, and the erosion of old-time moral certainties. The study of ethics should teach people to behave decently: classes seen as a remedy for dishonesty and corruption in the corporate world. Ethical behaviour does not seem to be teachable in the way that most skills are. Characterized by an emphasis on moral reasoning, the application of theory, and attention to controversial issues. Moral intuitions often come into conflict which cannot be settled by ethical theories, as they are highly abstract and can be modified to produce all kinds of results. Ethical theory itself offers no real answers since different theories point in different directions and their implications are usually vague. If successful, this approach may inspire students to think more philosophically, examine their prejudices, and cultivate the useful art of intellectual self-defence.
