Kp222 chapter 6 the endocrine system: endocrine glands and hormone actions. Primary endocrine organs main function is to secrete hormones. Secondary endocrine organs main function is something else, but they else secrete hormones. Examples: hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus, adrenal glands, pancreas, gonads (testes and ovaries), placenta (in pregnant females) Infundibulum: thin tissue connecting the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Neural connection between the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary. Gland (ppg: there are nerve cells (neurons) that connect the 2 structures, paraventricular nucleus (pvn) Adh (vasopressin) synthesized in neurons that originate there: supraoptic nucleus. Oxytocin synthesized in neurons that originate there: after synthesis, hormones go in vesicles and travel down the neuron to the axon terminal located in the posterior pituitary gland. Released through exocytosis when the neurons receive a signal. Released into blood: hormones called neurohormones because they are secreted by neurons and not endocrine glands.
