Document Summary

Vascular plants above (leaves & stems) + below (roots) ground. Roots: anchor plant + absorb h2o & minerals from soil, root system= taproot + fibrous root system. Consists of main taproot entering ground vertically: thick, sturdy, lateral roots grow out of taproot. Sweet potatoes, dahlias: type of plant determines taproot structure eg. plants in dessert envio w/ deep eater tables have deep taproot, occurs in gymnosperms & angiosperms. Fibrous: most monocots eg. grasses, adventitious roots: develop from stem, root hairs: absorb water (osmosis) & minerals. Shoot system: stems & leaves: harvest sunlight, provide support. Stems: support plant & leaves, store nutrients, generate new tissues eg. tuber: swollen, underground, stem, carbs storage & asexual reproduction; potatoes, corm: short, underground stem; crocus. Influencing branching: auxin (produced by apical bud), cytokinin, striogolactones. Auxin inhibits branching by interacting w/ these hormones: removal of apical bud: removes supply of endogenous auxin.
