Document Summary

In many species, reproduction requires attracting a mate, and traits adapted to increasing reproductive success can be under intense selective pressures. Male traits are often sexually selected based on female choice; hence many of the brightly colored and signing birds and insects are males. Honest advertising hypothesis: suggests that the bright coloration or other traits that are sexually selected are chosen by females because they suggest that the male displaying those traits is of high quality and has energy to spare. Individual can out-compete others even with the added handicap of those phenotype: females select males with these traits b/c they indicate a male in overall good health. Good genes hypothesis: suggests that these traits signal the presence of an advantageous gene(s, postulates linkage b/w favorable trait and the individual"s genes. Ex. bright-colored orange and yellow plumage of males. Sexual dimorphism: differences between sexes of the same species. Intersexual selection: sexual selection of males by females or females by males.
