Document Summary

Small number of elements combines in various ways. Everything is made up of a group of elements combined in different ways. An element contains only one type of atom. # protons = atomic number and specifies the atom as the particular element. Ex: an atom with six protons is always a carbon atom. Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons. Typically atoms have the same number of protons and electrons. Negatively charged electrons move around the nucleus. Ex: h+ (lost an electron positive charge) Across the periodic table has increasing atomic number. Across the row electrons are added until the outer shell contains its complement of eight electrons. First shell can only be filled by two electrons. Ex: lithium has two electrons in first orbital and then one electron in the second orbital. If you go vertical it is called a group or a family.
