At a very early age, students learn that a college degree is the first step in being successful in. Individuals who hold a degree have income advantages and are less likely to experience lay- offs in comparison to those w/ high-school diplomas. Many people believe that college degrees make you attractive to employers, which is why parents are willing to pay for the rising costs of postsecondary education. The human capital model states that students must attend college to obtain the skills and knowledge modern societies require, which allows them to acquire meaningful employment. This model is not always correct because most majors do not teach skills that are transferrable to jobs. Weber was the first sociologist to examine the function of postsecondary degrees.
