Max weber - based on biological traits. Essentialism - presumes that individual"s identity depends on fundamental and innate characteristics that are inherited and unchangeable. Contemporary sociologists - more subjective than weber thought. Racial classifications based on our beliefs and socially influenced perceptions of which kinds of people are biologically similar or different. External classification : imposed on individuals/groups by others. Ex: us government considers hispanics an ethnic not racial group, but they have been racialized into being considered by many to be a race such as whites or blacks.
