Sociology 2241E Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Honor Killing, Murder Of Reena Virk, Intimate Partner Violence
Document Summary
Violent crime is most often seen in men aged 15-24. Gender and age are the two most powerful predictors of violence. Evolutionary explanations; competition among males for sexual access to females: men fight with each other to maintain dominance over one another. Freudian explanation; males have aggression because of their hidden sexual desires. When masculinity and femininity are seen to be polar opposites, levels of male aggression and violence are also higher. Conclusions which anthropologists have drawn from studying violence (interpersonal and intersocietal) Thus, one of the most significant causes of male violence is gender inequality (as described above) Women tend to commit theft (shoplifting), common assault, fraud, and bail violations. Women are only about 10% of inmates. Male and female inmate populations tend to mimic one another in terms of demographics. In canada in 2005, only 10% of 650 homicides were committed by women.
