Psychology 2135A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 5-7: Aviary, Sensory Memory, Brenda Milner
Document Summary
Rely on memory to think back and recall information! Different forms of memory that involve encoding (acquiring information) and retrieval (calling previously stored information to the mind)! Memory enters into almost every cognitive activity in some way or another! Encoding occurs when information is rst translated into a form that other cognitive processes can use! Storage holds the information in some form for later retrieval! Forgetting occurs when we cannot retrieve information! Plato wrote about memory, and compared it to aviary and a wax tablet! During the middle ages and renaissance, memory was also compared to a save, and empty cabinet and a body in need of exercise! Memory was compared to a telephone and then to a computer in the 1950s! Closely connected to perception because it refers to the initial brief storage of sensory information! Many psychologists hypothesize that separate sensory memories exist for each sensory modality (visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile sensory memories)!
